LIFE TEEN
At St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, students are traditionally prepared to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion for the first time in the second-grade class. The curriculum used, Word of Life from Ignatius Press and the Augustine Institute, contains a comprehensive presentation and does a fine job of relaying the information in an age-appropriate manner. If a student is enrolled in third grade and hasn’t yet received the sacraments of reconciliation or Holy Eucharist, he or she will normally be placed in the second-grade class as long as class size permits. If there is not room for more students in the second-grade class, then a special class may be offered if possible, or parents may be required to work with the child independently to prepare them. In this case, parents will be given access to the second-grade parent portal, and they will have the opportunity to work through the materials at home. For students in fourth grade and higher, a special class will be offered during their regular class time. The class is called S.O.A.R. (Sacrament overview and reflection) and will prepare the students to receive the sacraments within the course of the school year. S.O.A.R. program consists of eight special sessions which reviews salvation history, the role of sacraments and the Catholic Christian life. Proper understanding and formation are of the upmost importance in preparing older students to receive the sacraments for the first time. For this reason, attendance is mandatory. Every effort should be made to attend the classes as scheduled. If for some reason the student is unable to attend, a make-up session or work will be required.
