Born in Nebraska to a brilliantly musical mother (she was a budding concert pianist) and a Pentecostal minister father, Gregg called several Midwest states ‘home’ during his formative years. His good guy, sincere roots began there. His love of music (as well as subsequent studies) was shared by his sister and brother. All three Reynolds kids are full-time professional music devotees.
Gregg was playing piano at age 4, organ by age 10 while also managing to learn (if not master) cornet, violin and ultimately harp in high school. He was fortunate post high-school to travel and perform in Europe – both with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and the SIU Concert Chorale. He also sang in a choir at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center before it was finished…circa 1975.
Though he received his undergraduate degree in Harp Performance at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, it was the Masters Program offered at the University of Arizona (and professors of Harp Performance with Julliard School-level credentials) that lured Gregg to Tucson.
While supporting himself doing non-music-related jobs, Gregg was hired part-time in 1990 at St. Francis Cabrini by Fr. Weber. While there, he began periodically ‘subbing’ at St. Thomas Masses as requested by Pastor Father Todd O'Leary, who promoted him soon thereafter to full-time.
!n 1996, Gregg was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith.
Gregg recently celebrated his 25-year ‘work’ anniversary at St. Thomas the Apostle during which time he has accompanied the Acclamation Choir, Parish Choir and Children’s Choir and soloists. He is a music ‘staple’ at Saturday’s 5 PM Vigil Mass, as well as Sunday’s 9 AM, 10:30 AM and Noon Masses.
His weekday work includes teaching in the
Opening Minds through Arts, a TUSD program designed to address the learning and appreciation of music from Kinder through 5
th grade – as children can best relate. Gregg, together with bass vocalist Juan Aguirre, currently teach language acquisition skills to 1
st grade students. They travel to various TUSD elementary schools, teaching 17 1/2 hour classes, twice a week.
Gregg continues to love performing; among his notable concerts was a summer series in Mexico (32 concerts in 30 days) – where his piano and harp skills were on full display.
He loves and appreciates St. Thomas the Apostle Parish...the people and the leadership.
